About the Opportunity

We are on a mission to help people improve their brain health by providing essential diagnostic insights through our FDA cleared BrainScope® One medical device.   

We’re looking for a Lead Android Platform Developer to drive the technical direction and development of our Android (AOS) based device platform by working closely with our enterprise architecture, an APK development team, and other stakeholders to ensure that AOS platform fits seamlessly into our cloud offering. Our primary application is public facing and critical to our success, requiring in this role an eye for design and color and an understanding of the Android UI view system.  Additionally, the role interfaces cross functionally, is considered the subject matter expert in the Android space for BrainScope, and leads the team of software engineers by directing, mentoring, and supporting them directly.

Your Responsibilities & Contribution

  • Responsibilities include ownership of the design and code base for our Android device platform and applications directly, to include writing, updating, and maintaining it

  • Represents the team with management, engineering, and other technical personnel to clarify program intent, identify problems, and suggest changes

  • Advances their skills by gaining knowledge of new technologies in Android development and applies that knowledge by supporting development in other software projects. Key development areas include application UI and layout implementation, inter-application communication, embedded signal acquisition, and cloud-based data management

  • Develops critical and robust application code for Android-based, connected devices

  • Writes, analyzes, reviews and rewrites programs, using workflow charts and diagrams, while applying knowledge of Android’s technological capabilities. Executes or directs repair or expansion existing programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements

  • Leads by demonstrating and implementing the best practices taken from formal software engineering principles (code design, code architecture, code re-use, coding for testability)

  • Develops and reviews specifications and code for medical devices, including product functional specifications, design specifications, and verification/validation procedures

  • Prepares complete software documentation as prescribed by U.S. and international medical device regulations (IEC 62304) and corporate quality management systems procedures.

  • Supports continuous improvement of company SDLC processes conforming to the IEC 62304 medical device software standard, utilizing CMMI and various software development models.

What you Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor’s Degree (minimum) in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field required, Masters preferred

  • 6-8 years of experience with Android development, with a focus on stability and robustness

  • In-depth knowledge of Java, Kotlin, and the Android framework as well as MVP or MVVM, interfacing with Web, APK and AAR APIs, and common Android development concepts

  • Experience with build scripting within Gradle using Groovy or Kotlin for Android application development

  • Experience writing automated tests using JUnit, Espresso, and Robolectric

  • Experience developing:

    • Applications with the Kotlin programming language and interoperating with Java

    • Applications with asynchronous task handling using RxJava

    • Applications interfacing with a RESTful API using Retrofit and OkHttp

  • Demonstrates very strong knowledge of the software development life cycle, including deployment in a regulated industry

  • Knowledge of best practices and direct experience with formal software engineering principles (code design regarding architecture, re-use, and testability)

  • Strong and clear communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to direct, mentor, and support members of the Android software engineering team
